How to Get on Google Maps as a Local Business

If you're a local business and you're not on Google Maps, you're missing out — big time. Most people use Maps to find shops, services and trades nearby. If they can’t see you, they’ll pick someone else.

Here’s a simple guide to help you get on Google Maps, appear in local search, and make sure your business shows up where it should.

1. Create (or Claim) Your Google Business Profile

This is the only way to get listed on Google Maps. It’s free, quick to set up, and you’ll get to control how your business appears.

Go to:

Once there:

  • Sign in with your Google account

  • Search for your business (in case it already exists)

  • If it doesn’t, click “Add your business”

  • Choose the most accurate category (e.g. Plumber, Hairdresser, Cafe)

  • Add your contact info, website, and service area

Google will usually ask you to verify the listing via post or email.

2. Add Photos and Real Info That Builds Trust

Once verified, you can edit your profile. Make it as complete as possible:

  • Upload clear photos (your shop front, van, workspace, products)

  • Add your opening hours

  • Write a short description of what you do

  • Keep your info up to date

This helps your listing appear higher when people search nearby.

3. Ask for Reviews — And Respond to Them

Google uses reviews as a trust signal. The more quality reviews you have, the better your chance of ranking higher on the map.

  • Ask happy clients to leave a quick review

  • Send them your unique review link (found in your Google Business dashboard)

  • Always reply — even a simple “Thanks for the feedback!” helps

4. Be Consistent Across the Web

Google checks your details against other listings like Yell, Facebook, or Bing. If your phone number or business name is different in each place, it can lower your ranking.

Top tip: Keep a saved version of your core details (Name, Address, Phone, Website) and copy/paste exactly when adding to directories.

5. Optimise Your Website for Local Search

Being on the map is step one — but to rank well, your website needs to back it up.

Make sure your site:

  • Includes your location in headings and page titles

  • Has your business name, address, and phone in the footer

  • Links to your Google Business listing

  • Loads fast and looks great on mobile
